Eczema is inflamed skin. It is also referred to as atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema.

When Eczema is present in a child, they often outgrow the condition by their 10th birthday. And, for some, the symptoms recur throughout their entire lives. When the disease is properly treated, it’s possible to control it.
Common symptoms include:
* Itching
* Cuts/rash
* Inflammation
* Warm, tender skin
* Dry, red or rough skin
* Burning sensation or pain
* Scaly, raw, or thickened skin
* Red bumps that may ooze, drain or crust
Regardless of where the eczema shows up, It’s almost always itchy. Frequently, the itching begins prior to the appearance of the rash. When the rash does appear, it’s most common on the face, back of the knees, wrists, hands, or feet – and, it’s not limited to those areas. When eczema flares up, the skin may begin to feel hot and itchy. If the person makes the mistake of scratching, the skin usually becomes red, inflamed, or blistered. Some people with eczema are unable to resist the urge to scratch and their skin becomes tough and leathery.
If you’re diagnosed with eczema, your doctor might:
- prescribe medications to soothe the redness and irritation, such as creams or ointments that contain corticosteroids, or antihistamine pills
- recommend other medications to take internally if the eczema is really bad or you get it a lot
Others find that their skin becomes extremely dry and scaly. Even though many people have eczema, the symptoms can vary quite a bit from person to person.

Some people have an ‘atopic tendency’ which means that it’s possible that they may progress to any or all of the three conditions that are closely linked: atopic eczema, asthma and hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Often these conditions run within families with a parent, child or sibling also affected. A family history of asthma, eczema or hay fever is particularly useful in diagnosing atopic eczema in infants.
