Oral Placement

Oral PlacementOral Placement Therapy is a type of therapy that uses oral motor movements and sequences used that are necessary for developing appropriate feeding skills and the clear production of sounds.

If your child has challenges eating, chewing, and/or swallowing food an SLP can help. One of the recommendations that might be made for your child is to implement Oral Placement Therapy (OPT).

  • Feeding Therapy

We specialize in using a variety of tools to achieve speech and feeding goals. Children are evaluated for speech clarity levels and feeding development skills. Children are assessed during each therapy session and tools are progressed as oral skills develop.

Oral Placement Therapy focuses on the movements that are associated with chewing, swallowing and the production of speech sound and can assist with proprioceptive awareness. It may also aid in developing the proper sequencing of movement, through repetition and patterning.

Crucial for the success of the oral placement therapy is one’s understanding of the functional movements required for chewing, swallowing and speech is. Our therapists have extensive background and training in this area.

OPT consists of a variety of tools and exercises that can build specific muscles and enhance motor movements for speech production. This therapy approach allows the child to feel the movements necessary to produce the speech sounds that are difficult for them in addition to hearing and seeing how the sound is produced.

The activities are designed to be fun and motivating for children to complete both with their SLP and at home.
